Aside from having the majority of active volcanoes in the Caribbean, Dominica is loaded with waterfalls both large and small. One of the more difficult to reach but most spectacular falls is the Sari Sari Falls in the Morne Trois Pitons National Park which falls about 150 feet into a large pool of water that visitors are allowed to swim in.
Sari Sari Falls
The hike to Sari Sari Falls takes about 45 minutes and includes lots of hills and water crossings, so it’s not for everyone. Also in the Park are the Trafalgar Falls, which is comprised of two water falls that are smaller than Sari Sari Falls at 125 ft and 95ft. The falls are known as the Mother and Father and are much easier to view than Sari Sari.
A popular excursion that has helped make Dominica travel one of the top 10 Caribbean cruise destinations is to combine the Trafalgar Falls with a visit to either Ti Tou Gorge or the Emerald Pool, both of which feature waterfalls of their own.
Visitors to the Emerald Pool can relax in the emerald green pool that is fed by a 50 ft waterfall and visitors to the gorge can swim up stream through a crack in the cave to a couple of smaller waterfalls. With the help of a guide, you can even jump off one of these smaller falls into the cool pool of water below.
Most of the well known cruise lines travel Dominica, but due to the southern location of the island they are typically longer, more expensive itineraries. You can, however, save some money by choosing one of the Carnival or Royal Caribbean trips out of San Juan, Puerto Rico.
