Lava Beach Walk: AVAILABLE

Guided Lava Beach Walk
Our Lava Beach Walk lasts from 2 to 4 hours, depending on the time you have available. It covers from 2 to 3 miles round trip. We leave from our house located on the 1990 lava flow, and take you across private and public land to the coast. This interpretive walk gives you an in-depth perspective of the recent volcanic activity in the Kalapana area. It also includes a trek into an ancient lava tube that holds much cultural and historic significance for the local Hawaiians.
The Highlights of this walk:
- Exploring three new lava fields, which covered this area in July 2010, November 2010 and January 2011.
- The 2010 Lava Bench is brand new land created where lava flowed into the ocean. It covers more than 32 acres and was formed over the course of 4 months.
- A new Black Sand Beach was born here in July 2010. It currently is covered by black sand at the top of the beach, and smooth lava rocks at the water’s edge. It offers plenty of shade for a perfect picnic setting!
- The Cave of Refuge is an amazing natural and cultural treasure. It is actually a lava tube, fortified long ago by native Hawaiians, used as a place of defense and refuge in times of war. It is about 110 meters long, and opens out directly from the sea cliff about 60 feet above the ocean!
Who Can Do The Walk?
About half of the walk crosses raw lava fields where there is no defined trail. Lava can be crumbly or slippery, and sometimes the footing is not very stable. We encounter many cracks and crevasses in the lava fields. Therefore this walk is classified as moderately difficult. It is not suitable for anyone who has difficulty with balance or normal walking. However, children of any age are welcome. In general, we take it nice and easy, and go as slowly as the group needs to in order to feel comfortable.
The entrance to the Cave of Refuge is a tight squeeze that requires crouching and/or crawling for about 10 feet. If you prefer not to enter the cave, it is easy to sit and wait outside for the rest of the group. The entrance is located in a very pleasant shady spot in the forest.
You may have heard that gasses and fumes that emerge from active lava zones can trigger asthma conditions or aggravate people with respiratory conditions. This walk covers areas that are not currently active and therefore do not emit fumes.
